Forget the polished, robotic “paradise found” narratives you usually see in travel brochures.

Real adventure is about the small, perfectly timed moments: the sunset migration of thousands of flying foxes at Kalong Island, arriving just as the sky turns a deep, bruised orange.

This March, an international group of divers joined us aboard the EcoPro Duyung Baru for a six-day trip that reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

With a maximum of only eight guests on our traditional phinisi, we do not believe in one-size-fits-all diving. Throughout the week, we split into small groups, giving everyone the freedom to explore Komodo at their own pace, without the herd mentality of larger boats.

Komodo Nationalpark Diving: Epic Drifts & Hidden Treasures Like Seahorses

The trip started with a bang. On day one at Mawan, we were joined by five manta rays that seemed just as curious about us as we were about them.

But Komodo is not just about the giants; at Wae Nilu, we slowed things down to find seahorses camouflaged in the reef, a cute little treasure that our guests ranked right alongside the mantas.

The conditions were exactly what you hope for in late March: flat, calm water, a comfortable 27°C, and luckily, we had not a single drop of rain the entire week. This allowed us to visit some of the park’s most iconic spots with 10–20m visibility:

Batu Bolong: A classic manta flyby kept everyone’s cameras busy during a central Komodo dive.
Tatawa Besar: One group got a real taste of Komodo’s legendary power, being pushed along the North Corner by a ripping current for a 36-minute adrenaline ride.
Police Corner and Pengah Kecil: The vibrant corals and shark sightings later in the week proved that even without mantas on every dive, the reef life here is world-class.

Phinisi Lifeboard: Komodo Dragon Trek & Gourmet Meals

Between dives, on one afternoon, we headed ashore to trek with the Komodo dragons, witnessing these prehistoric predators in their natural, rugged habitat.

These animals appear so lazy, but believe it or not, they can react lightning-fast.

The culinary side of the trip was equally impressive. Our chef, Wiky, was the standout of the week, receiving huge compliments for serving gourmet meals every single day. From housekeeping handled by Leksi to engineering by Sahril, the entire crew was providing a seamless, high-end experience for our guests in the middle of the ocean.

Small Group Komodo Diving: Flexibility & Personal Adventures

By the time we cruised back into Labuan Bajo, the feedback was clear: the guests loved the flexibility when diving in small groups.

Whether it was a night dive at Lasa Island or staying an extra hour at a special site, our small-group format made the trip more personal, more relaxed, and more rewarding.
