Best Time to Dive Komodo National Park: Dry vs Green Season Guide

In short: The best time to dive Komodo depends on what you want to see.

So, you’re planning your trip to Komodo? We totally get why.

It’s one of those rare places where the rugged beauty of the islands is matched by the explosion of life beneath the surface. Because Komodo National Park is not only an UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a place of wild currents and distinct seasons. Timing your trip with EcoPro Duyung Baru is key to getting the experience you’re looking for.

But what is the best time to dive Komodo?

Komodo's underwater world

Komodo Dry Season Diving: Apr-Dec Visibility & Manta Peaks

Most divers aim for this window. From April to October, the weather is dry, the skies are blue, and the sea conditions are generally calm.

  • Visibility at its best: During these months, you’ll often enjoy crystal-clear water, especially in the central and northern sites like Crystal Rock or Castle Rock.

  • Manta Encounters: While Mantas can be seen year-round, the "Manta season" in the central and south areas peaks between December and February, though we see them throughout the dry season too.

Komodo Green Season: Jan-Mar Quiet Dives & Lush Islands

Don't let the term "rainy season" put you off. While there might be some rain, it usually comes in short bursts. The upside? The islands are lush and green, and the dive sites are much quieter. This is a great time for scuba diving in small groups who want a more private feel at the major hotspots.

North vs South Komodo: Water Temps, Mantas & Plankton

Komodo is unique because it’s a transition zone between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This creates two distinct "micro-climates":

  • The North: Usually warmer (27–29°C) with great visibility. Think vibrant coral gardens and schools of hunting trevallies.

  • The South: This is where the nutrient-welling happens. The water can drop to 23–25°C. It’s cooler and the water is greener, but this is the "plankton soup" that attracts the giants.

EcoPro Duyung Baru: Small Group Komodo Timing Strategy

At EcoProDivers, we choose our routes based on the moon phases and tides to ensure you aren't just fighting a current, but gliding with it safely.

Because we specialize in scuba diving with small groups, with a boat capacity of a maximum of only 8 guests on the Duyung Baru, split into two dive groups, we have the flexibility to adjust our dive schedule to the best possible conditions of the day. Whether it’s the quiet joy of spotting a rare nudibranch or watching the Komodo sunset from the deck of your Phinisi boat, we make sure the timing is right for you.

If you want the best of both worlds, calm seas and the highest chance of seeing everything from Pygmy Seahorses to Komodo Dragons, we usually recommend the shoulder months (April/May or September/October).

Komodo's Macro life

Beyond the world-class reefs, there is so much more to experience on land, from amazing viewpoints to the famous Komodo Dragons. This mix of underwater wonder and island exploration is what makes our tours so diversified.
