On our recent journey through the Maldives' Deep South, the EcoPro Mariana became a floating sanctuary for a group of explorers bound by a shared love for the sea.

Shark Action and Channel Flying in the Deep South
The energy was high as we ventured into Vaavu Atoll. The currents were out in force, which is exactly what draws the big life into the channels.
Following our essential safety drills (because your security is the foundation of every dive we do), we headed into the blue.
One of those standout moments happened at Miyaru Kandu. By gathering for a 6:00 a.m. briefing, we slipped into the water before any other boats arrived, granting our guests a private audience with dozens of grey reef sharks and elegant eagle rays. Being the only souls in the channel as the morning light pierced the depths is a feeling that stays with you. For our guests, many of whom are seasoned drift-divers, "flying" through these channels was a masterclass in why the Deep South is legendary.
Rare Encounters and Vibrant Coral Gardens
Nature always provides its own balance. While the mantas at Kurali didn't show that day, the reef rewarded our patience with its smaller treasures. We spotted a tiny, 1x1cm juvenile yellow boxfish, a bright yellow cube of pure personality that quickly became the trip’s unofficial mascot.
But the EcoPro Mariana experience extends far beyond the dive deck. It’s about the community we build over Sampath’s incredible steak dinners and the collective excitement when a massive Whale Shark glides right up to the back of the boat. Seeing these giants in their natural habitat reinforces our commitment to eco-friendly operations, from our plastic-reduction initiatives to the reef-safe practices we share with every guest.
The Big Five: From Tiger Sharks to Manta Madness
As we pushed further south toward Fuvahmulah and Addu, the scale of the encounters reached a new level. In FVM, we watched with bated breath as two tiger sharks patrolled the blue. Later, at the South Plateau, "HD visibility" allowed us to track massive tunas and another giant tiger shark as they moved with effortless power.
The grand finale in Addu Atoll was a true celebration of the ocean. At the manta cleaning station, we spent a full hour in the company of several mantas: a slow-motion ballet that left the entire group speechless.
To top it off, as we cruised back on the dhoni, we observed a group of mantas feeding at the surface, flanked by a playful pod of dolphins. Can it be any more spectacular? I don't think so. That was the Maldives Deep South at its very best!
