Mantas, Moonlit Beaches & Unforgettable Drift Dives: August 2027 Highlights on the Maldives Northern Atolls Liveaboard

It is about the shared silence when a four-meter manta ray glides inches above your mask, the taste of sea salt on your lips, and laughing with new friends under a canopy of stars. Throughout August, three incredible groups joined us aboard our flagship vessel, the EcoPro Seascape, for our Maldives Northern Atolls liveaboard, as we sailed through the Baa and Lhaviyani Atolls. Here is what made these weeks so unforgettable.
Swirling Mantas and a Surprise Giant
Baa Atoll in August is a haven for pelagic life. As Southwest Monsoon currents push nutrient-rich waters into Hanifaru Bay, the ocean turns into a bustling feeding hub. Snorkeling right at the surface, we watched in awe as over 45 manta rays performed synchronized barrel rolls, sweeping through clouds of plankton.
Over at Dhigu Thila, the reef was buzzing with energy. Bright soft corals swayed in the gentle current while yellow snappers blanketed the drop-offs. While watching nine resident mantas patiently waiting at their favorite cleaning station, a shadow emerged from the deep blue. A curious, massive whale shark slowly glided past our group. Floating weightlessly as these two gentle giants shared the same reef is a memory none of us will ever forget, the exact reason divers choose a Maldives liveaboard diving journey.
Fast Channels and Tiny Ocean Treasures
Cruising north toward Lhaviyani Atoll brought a dynamic change of pace. At Kuredu, heading north into Lhaviyani Atoll, the rhythm of our dives shifted. Hooked onto the reef edge at Kuredu Express, we sat back as incoming currents brought a procession of grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and a massive wall of bigeye jacks.
Yet, the small details were just as captivating. At Dhonfanu Gaa, our eagle-eyed guides pointed out shy leaf fish, black frogfish blending into sponges, and a nudibranch at Kihaadhufaru so large it rivaled the size of a parrotfish. During our safety stops, gentle hawksbill turtles swam lazily around our surface buoys, giving us time to pause and absorb the moment on our Maldives Northern Atolls liveaboard route.
Deck Life, Sashimi & Full-Moon Dinners
Back on our 43-meter flagship, the EcoPro Seascape, moments between dives felt like hanging out at a cozy floating home. Guests stepped off our spacious 20-meter diving dhoni to chilled towels, warm smiles, and fresh coconut juice. As the afternoon light softened, everyone gathered on the sundeck, relaxing in the Jacuzzi or sipping espresso at the barista bar.
Food was always a celebration. Our chef spoiled us daily with fresh tuna sashimi platters, local Maldivian curries, and international dishes. When a sudden tropical shower hit one afternoon, we turned it into an impromptu coconut party on deck, which naturally evolved into salsa dancing under the stars.
On land, we explored vibrant local culture during guided Malé city walks and spent an enchanting evening on a deserted sandbank, enjoying a beach dinner under a glowing full moon.
Conscious Cruising in the Maldives
Protecting these pristine ecosystems is at the heart of everything we do. Throughout August, our guests joined our crew for beach cleanups on local island shorelines and sandbanks. Onboard, our reverse-osmosis water filtration system, reusable water flasks, and eco-friendly amenities ensure we tread lightly on the places we explore.
