Imagine when you step off a plane, go onto a luxurious boat, and you look at the turquoise waters of the Maldives.

This past week on the EcoPro Seascape, our flagship Maldives liveaboard, we welcomed 15 guests ready to explore the deep blue. While travel occasionally has its hiccups, like a couple of pieces of delayed luggage, our team ensured everyone was settled and ready for the Maldives Central Atolls in time.

Chasing Currents in South Male

As always, and never skipped, we've started the journey with our general boat briefing, followed by the safety drill: every guest wears a rescue vest and is shown how to use it. Also, we simulate an emergency case to train the guests on the safety protocol.

Then, finally, our Maldives Central Atolls liveaboard kicked off with a cruise toward the South Male Atoll. We started with a check dive at Vilivaru Giri, which offered stunning visibility and a playground for macro lovers. But the Maldives is famous for its big action, and the Indian Ocean did not disappoint.

At Kandooma, we hit the water just as a small outgoing current began to pull. What followed was pure adrenaline: a literal wall of sharks patrolling the cleaning station and schools of eagle rays gliding past with effortless grace. We saw a similar "shark wall" at Miyaru Kandu, where the crystal-clear water made every silver fin and spotted ray stand out in high definition. Even our snorkeler had a blast, joining all the sessions and seeing the vibrant life from the surface.

Sharks Under the Stars and Hidden Wonders of Maldives Central Atolls Liveaboard

One of the week’s absolute highlights happened at the Alimatha Jetty. With a gentle incoming current and water so clear it felt like liquid air, we descended into a world of nurse sharks and blacktip sharks. A small eagle ray even made a guest appearance, making the picture perfect.

As we crossed to the South Ari Atoll, the sightings continued.

At Kurarah Thila, we were the only boat on-site, a rare luxury that allowed us to enjoy a private show of sharks and hunting tunas. Later, an easy drift at Archers revealed a staggering amount of marine life.

Manta Magic and Island Life

If you’ve ever dreamed of being surrounded by giants, the Fesdhoo area delivered. During the day, we explored the Fesdhoo wreck, spotting rare Harlequin shrimps and even a passing manta ray. But the real show began after the sun went down. Our night manta dive was nothing short of spectacular, with more than five majestic mantas dancing in our floodlights.

The excitement reached its peak at Gangehi Manta Point. We spent two dives watching a massive gathering of manta rays at the cleaning station. It’s hard to describe the feeling of being completely still while dozens of these gentle giants hover just inches above you.

The EcoPro Experience: BBQ and Sunsets

At EcoProDivers, we believe the time between dives is just as important as the time spent underwater. We took the fun to the shore at Dighurah Beach for a traditional BBQ under the stars, where some guests took the canoes out for a sunset paddle. We even celebrated a birthday on board, complete with the kind of laughter that only a week at sea can produce.

On our final evening, we gathered on a picnic island for "Kurumba" (fresh coconut) at the beach, watching one of those legendary Maldivian sunsets. Whether you are a seasoned pro or looking to try a Discover Scuba Diving session for the first time, as one of our happy guests did this week, on request we can manage that on our liveaboard boats.
