A week of Pelagics, Fun Surprises and Unforgettable Moments aboard the EcoPro Mariana

Our latest 7-night full charter through the Central Atolls brought together a friendly and enthusiastic group of divers from the Czech Republic.  Each of them was eager to encounter as much pelagic marine life as the Indian Ocean could offer.  With high spirits and full of hope, the trip began with a promise of a manta encounter.  Easy, right?

Our first major stop was supposed to be the manta cleaning station, where you are almost 99% guaranteed to see mantas.  But the weather has other plans, so it was decided to forego this site for now.  Later that day, we made a second attempt to visit the cleaning station.  The conditions looked promising, with a gentle northern current, great visibility, and a very patient group eagerly awaiting with excitement.  We were all hoping this was it, our luck is just about to start on the first day, but as nature sometimes reminds us, wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. Despite the perfect setup, the mantas were nowhere to be found!  Still, the ocean had a surprise of its own. While waiting for mantas to show up, a group of eagle rays surprised us as they glided gracefully through the current, captivating everyone with their effortless movement. Not the manta encounter we hoped for, but undeniably a pleasant surprise.

A week of Macro and Micro Marine Life

As the days rolled on, the Central Atolls did not disappoint and delivered a generous mix of marine life, both macro and micro marine life.

The group enjoyed an abundant encounter with different shark species, along with various macro critters hiding within the reefs, as well as colourful reef fishes. The main highlight came when, in one of the dives, a whale shark appeared unexpectedly.  This was a truly unforgettable moment that instantly became the favourite and talk of the trip.

Meanwhile, despite repeated efforts to visit dive sites with frequent manta sightings, the manta rays continued to be unbelievably elusive during the dives.  Luck, however, always has its own timing!

Mantas at Night: The Surprise We Needed

One night, while the boat was calmly anchored in Ari Atoll, the moment that everyone was waiting for finally happened! After the night dive and everyone had returned to the boat, hung up their swimsuits, and were ready to call it a day, it suddenly happened, the mantas appeared! And to everyone’s delight, they started circling at the stern and stayed there a couple of minutes.  Finally, the mantas had graced the group with their presence, and within a few minutes, everyone was joyfully back in the water.  Everyone was happy to be snorkelling alongside these graceful giants, finally ticking off the encounter they've been anticipating and hoping for since day one.

Island Visits, Sandbanks, and Sunset Drinks

Due to unfavourable sea conditions, the group decided to skip one of the dives and visit Dhangethi Island instead. It was a welcome break for everyone to stretch their legs on land after hours at sea, wandering through the island’s quiet streets, browsing in a few souvenir shops, and just observing the local atmosphere.

After returning to the boat, everyone just relaxed with a refreshing kurumba before dinner was served, and capped off the night.

The group was also treated to a stop at a secluded sandbank. With cocktails in hand, the group watched as the sun set into the horizon, painting the sky with warm tropical colours. It was the perfect and beautiful end of another memorable day.

Weathering the Weather: A Trip to Remember

This adventure wasn’t without its challenges. Rough seas and changing sea conditions tested our crew and the group's patience and determination to make the most of this trip. In the end, we were rewarded with an unforgettable experience. From the majestic pelagics to the much-awaited and anticipated manta encounters, the week left everyone buzzing with excitement and gratitude.

In the end, our Central Atolls liveaboard proved that even when conditions aren’t perfect, the ocean always finds a way to deliver magical moments.
