Nitrox is especially beneficial for liveaboard diving, where multiple dives per day can quickly lead to nitrogen builtup when diving on air.

So, you’ve booked your dream cruise with us at EcoProDivers. You’re dreaming of the vibrant reefs and deep channel dives of the Maldives or the exciting currents of Komodo. You’re looking at three dives a day, plus maybe a night dive. But there is one question that always pops up: "Should I dive with Nitrox?"

The short answer? Absolutely! If you want to feel fresher, stay down longer, and maximize safety, Nitrox is your best friend.

What is Nitrox (Enriched Air Nitrox)?

In the diving world, when we talk about Nitrox (or Enriched Air Nitrox - EANx), we usually mean a mix of nitrogen and oxygen where the oxygen content is higher than the usual 21% found in regular air.

The most common mixes are between Nitrox 30 (30% oxygen) and Nitrox 36 (36% oxygen).

By increasing the oxygen the amount of nitrogen you breathe is decreasing automatically.

The Problem with Air and Repetitive Liveaboard Diving

When you dive with normal air, your body absorbs nitrogen. The deeper and longer you stay, the more nitrogen dissolves into your tissues. On a liveaboard, where we dive multiple times a day for a week or more, this nitrogen builds up.

If you dive on air, here is what happens:

  • Shorter Bottom Times: As the days progress, your "No Deco Limit" (NDL) gets shorter and shorter. On your third or fourth dive of the day, your computer might tell you to head up much sooner than you’d like, even if you still have plenty of air in your tank.

  • The "Liveaboard Issue": Absorbing and off-gassing large amounts of nitrogen is hard work for your body. Many divers find themselves feeling quite exhausted by the evening after a few days of repetitive air dives.

Why Nitrox Diving is highly recommended for Liveaboard Diving

We focus on a "Safety First" approach. This is why Nitrox is such a core part of our experience (and why it’s often a free benefit for our Member-Program guests!).

1. More Time with the Big Stuff

Whether you are watching the cruising sharks in the current of the Maldives or enjoing the flying Mantas in Komodo, you don't want to leave just when the action gets good. Nitrox gives you significantly more "No-Stop" time at medium depths (15m to 30m).

2. Increased Safety Margin

Even if you don't stay down longer, diving a Nitrox mix while keeping your computer set to "Air" (or simply diving a conservative profile) creates a massive safety buffer. You are absorbing less nitrogen, which reduces the physiological stress on your body and lowers the risk of decompression sickness.

3. Feeling Energized for the Sundowner

One of the most reported benefits is simply feeling better. Even though it isn't proven by science divers often find they have more energy for the evening activities, watching presentations, or a sunset drink on the sundeck when they’ve been breathing Enriched Air all day.

Nitrox Certification on a Liveaboard

Never used Nitrox before? No worries! You don’t need to spend your weekends in a classroom before your holiday.

You can complete your Enriched Air Diver course right here with us on the EcoPro Mariana, Seascape, or Duyung Baru. Our expert guides will teach you how to analyze your tank, log your mix, and set your computer. It’s a quick, easy, and incredibly rewarding way to level up your diving skills while you’re already in paradise.
